Obama’s Big Lie: Radio Ad Blames Oil Companies for Gas Prices

April 15, 2008

By Bill Levinson

Barack Obama’s latest radio advertisement underscores his belief that small town Pennsylvanians are dirt-ignorant farmers, coal miners, and factory workers who “cling to guns and religion,” and are therefore incapable of knowing when a slick college boy and Harvard lawyer from a real city like Chicago is telling them a whopper. Then again, Obama’s efforts to blame “Big Oil” for $4.00 a gallon gasoline–the quoted price itself being an outright lie–conforms perfectly to the following principles.

…there was no point in seeking to convert the intellectuals. For intellectuals would never be converted and would anyway always yield to the stronger, ‘and this will always be the man in the street.’ Arguments must therefore be crude, clear and forcible, and appeal to emotions and instincts, not the intellect. Truth was unimportant and entirely subordinate to tactics and psychology… Hatred and contempt must be directed at particular individuals

-H. Trevor-Roper (ed), The Goebbels Diaries, p. XX, cited in Regan, Geoffrey. 1987. Great Military Disasters. New York: M. Evans and Company.

Obama’s Propaganda Man, the person to whom he directs his Big Lie, is clearly Joseph Goebbels’ “man in the street”–or perhaps that hypothetical small town Pennsylvanian who clings to guns and religion. The prevalence of this advertisement, which plays very frequently throughout the day, offers us an opportunity to demolish Obama’s credibility by circulating the truth as widely as possible. We can make Obama’s own propaganda into a force multiplier that works for us.

If everyone has heard Obama’s ad, then we do not need to convince them that Obama has told them that “Big Oil” is responsible for $4/gallon gasoline; they know this. All we need to do is hand them the other half of the picture, and Obama goes on record as a proven liar, fraud, and charismatic demagogue: a cross between Elmer Gantry and Shakespeare’s Jack Cade. This is why it is so important to circulate this material as widely as possible, and we urge our readers to do exactly that.

Let’s begin by letting Mr. Obama speak for himself.

Across Pennsylvania, we’re living the problems.
An economy in shambles. Families struggling. Gas prices close to four dollars a gallon.
    What’s Hillary Clinton’s answer?
    Misleading negative ads.
    Here’s the truth.
While she’s played political games, it’s Barack Obama who’s taken on the oil companies, demanding higher gas mileage standards and a larger investment in alternative energy.
It’s Obama who’s worked to strip tax breaks from the oil giants as they roll up record profits.
And he’s the only candidate who doesn’t take a dime from oil company PACs or lobbyists. The only one.
The Federal Election Commission reports that Clinton’s taken more from Big Oil and other PACs and lobbyists than any other candidate, Democrat or Republican.
The same old Washington politics isn’t going to lift our economy or bring down gas prices.
So if you’ve had your fill of that…
Vote for change we can believe in, Barack Obama for President.

This radio ad serves up several outright lies for the price of one. We cannot overemphasize the amount of money that Obama has at his disposal to repeat his Big Lie as often as possible, along with the fact that any of our readers can inflict catastrophic damage on his campaign with one letter to the editor that exposes him as a liar. One well written and on-target letter in one of those small town newspapers can probably negate the effect of thousands of dollars in advertising. A good letter in a newspaper in Erie or Scranton can negate tens of thousands of dollars from Obama’s war chest. Every one of us can make a difference. Now let’s break down Obama’s taqqiya du jour a piece at a time.

Across Pennsylvania, we’re living the problems.
An economy in shambles. Families struggling. Gas prices close to four dollars a gallon.

Here are current gasoline prices in Pennsylvania. As of April 14, regular gasoline is available from Sheetz for $3.25 per gallon. In Scranton (Northeast PA), prices range from $3.26 to $3.40 or so. Obama must think those gun-obsessed church-loving farmers, coal miners, and factory workers can’t even read the prices at their local gas stations.

What’s Hillary Clinton’s answer?
Misleading negative ads.

Pot, meet kettle.

Here’s the truth.

Didn’t George Orwell’s 1984 feature a Ministry of Truth? “War is peace, ignorance is freedom…”

While she’s played political games, it’s Barack Obama who’s taken on the oil companies, demanding higher gas mileage standards and a larger investment in alternative energy. It’s Obama who’s worked to strip tax breaks from the oil giants as they roll up record profits.

This document from the U.S. Senate shows that Obama’s statements are at variance with the truth (or, to put it more clearly, he is lying). The links for crude oil prices and taxes are not part of the government document; they have been added for reference.

The price of gasoline that is paid by consumers at the gasoline pump reflects the cost of crude oil that is purchased by the refiner; the refiner’s processing and distribution costs and profits; the retail distribution, marketing and station operating costs and profits (and sometimes losses); and federal, state, and local taxes. On average, in 2000, the percentage of each of these components of the retail price of a gallon of regular grade gasoline was:
    Crude oil: 46 percent;
    • Refining costs and profits: 14 percent;
    • Retail distribution, marketing, and station operations: 12 percent; and.
Taxes (not including county and local taxes): 28 percent

Gasoline prices have risen since 2000 so the tax portion is now less, but state and Federal taxes cost Pennsylvania drivers 49.6 cents per gallon. At $110 a barrel, crude oil meanwhile costs about $2.62 a gallon, and this obviously has something to do with higher gasoline prices. Obama, however, seeks to scapegoat the oil companies, and his taqqiya continues,

We small town Pennsylvanians have yet to see how that smart college boy from that big city plans to lift our economy or bring down gas prices. As Henry Ford (who, unlike Barack Obama, didn’t go to a fancy college or Harvard law school) told us long ago, there are three ways to create wealth: grow it, mine it, or make it. That is how Henry Ford made the United States the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth, while creating a middle class of blue-collar workers who tend to vote Democratic. We doubt that Obama knows very much about agriculture, mining, or manufacturing, as these activities are the province of folks who cling to guns and religion as opposed to big city college boys with Harvard law degrees.

As for lower gas prices, he will have to find a way to increase the crude oil supply or reduce the demand. The truth is that the demand will continue to grow with the economies of China and India, and that we will need alternatives like synthetic oil from coal. The processes already exist, noting that the Germans converted coal into oil when the Allies cut off their oil supplies during the Second World War. The oil companies will not, however, need a smart Harvard lawyer from Chicago to tell them that, when the price of gasoline from crude oil exceeds that of synthetic gasoline from coal, it might be profitable to build chemical plants that turn coal into gasoline. Any farmer, coal miner, or factory worker from small town Pennsylvania can figure out that much.

Barack Obama is a cross between the fictional and hypocritical evangelist Elmer Gantry and Shakespeare’s Jack Cade. Cade’s platform was almost identical to Obama’s: “Be brave, then; for your captain is brave, and vows reformation. There shall be in England seven half-penny loaves sold for a penny: the three-hoop’d pot shall have ten hoops …there shall be no money; all shall eat and drink on my score; and I will apparel them all in one livery, that they may agree like brothers, and worship me their lord.” Even the groundlings (working class people who had to sit on the ground because they could not afford theater seats) who watched Shakespeare’s plays knew how ridiculous this proposition was, but Obama’s contempt for voters is such that he expects them to believe his similar propositions.

Vote for change we can believe in, Barack Obama for President.

“Clap your hands and believe really hard” is more to the point, because only in fairy tales can a charismatic demagogue like Barack Obama improve the economy and bring prosperity. In the real world, charismatic demagogues tend to be the stuff of nightmares.

…they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously

    –Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf
